*This comprehensive metalsmithing class has been carefully designed to introduce the fundamentals of jewelry design and execution. Studio habits, classroom safety, and design elements will be covered in detail. This Metals I class is the beginning of learning specific metalsmithing skills. Subsequent metals classes have been designed to build on each other, step by step, reinforcing what has already been learned as well as introducing new techniques. (See below for more details of Metals II, & III).
*Students will learn wellover 20 techniques by building a pendant and a pair of earrings:
Students will learn how to solder, saw, pierce, hammer, file, sand, buff, anneal metal, roll print, hammer texture, patina, set stones, make templates, stamp, dome, ball up wire, make a bail, make ear wires and a post for the pearl on the earring to be attached to, as well as different finishing techniques. Students will receive an in-depth soldering lecture which covers many aspects of soldering, tools, chemicals and STUDIO SAFETY. Time will be spent on 'practice soldering’ copper pieces before actually soldering the silver projects. Each student will have the instructor present while soldering to guide the process and ensure success.
*Two primary projects, a pendant and a pair of earrings, will be offered, and students should finish both projects during class. In addition, students will have the opportunity to make one ‘dog tag’ and one key chain charm out of copper. Students will receive a folder of jewelry making info and detailed handouts for both primary projects, with room to add notes and “how to’s.” Students are encouraged to bring a camera (or cell phone) in order to photograph various set ups and directions as the instructor directs. Upon successful completion of this class, students will be awarded a Certificate of Completion for 30 hours class time & will be given a free 4 hour Open Studio card.
*Metals II students will concentrate on bezeling and stone setting skills. Bracelet elements and making a toggle are added. The second project is a flat wire ring with a faceted stone. These skills will be learned in Metals II, and perfected in Metals III. Upon completion, students will receive an extensive handout, a Certificate of Completion for 30 hours class time & a free 4 hour Open Studio card.
*Metals III students will design their own heavy filigree wire project incorporating more faceted stones and pearls (or other stones) and learn to do a hollow box pendant, also with a faceted stone. This box pendant is designed by the student and executed with instructor’s help. These projects reinforce what has already been introduced in Metals I and II. Students are awarded a Certificate of Completion for 30 hours class time as well as a $25 gift card to apply towards a future class or workshop.
*Due to rising metal costs, all tool lists for Metals I, II, & III have been modified so the silver sheet cost has been cut in half. Students in these classes can now buy smaller quantities.
*DSMA offers Metalsmithing I tool kits to rent for $25. This saves students $100 off of their beginning supply costs. If you are enrolled in a Beginning class and would like to rent one, please call the school at (303) 428-3162 to reserve your kit. Ask for Jenny or Tori.
"If you are going to take a jewelry making class, take it at DSMA. Dollar for dollar it is the best value. You get detailed instructions, individualized attention, hands on classes. You will come away with more skills than from any other place. The Naja next to the school is brilliant! You can run next door and get supplies, plus the employees at the Naja know exactly what is needed for class, and can give suggestions when there are options that need to be decided upon. At DSMA you are encouraged and never belittled or made to feel dumb. The instructors are very safety conscious and they are always watching to make sure everything is done safely. This was hands down the most enjoyable class I have ever taken!" Gail K.
"I flew into Denver specifically to take the DSMA intensive becuase I had an understanding that the school would teach me fundamental techniques that I needed for success as a metalsmith. My expectations were exceeded because not only was the instruction stellar, but the instructors themselves were personable, friendly and genuine. I appreciated the thought and consideration that were put into the classes - skills were built upon skills and there was a clear methodical order to the structure of the class, which I think benefits beginning students." Serena C.
"Metals I Intensive is a fast-paced, but fun class. Even if you have made jewelry for years, this class is still very useful! The class was planned out so well, I loved it. I really enjoyed that I learned so many techniques!" Alyssa E.
"I learned alot about how metal behaves under heat, what you can do with metals & combination of metals, how to make bezels, & how to solder silver. Metals I Intensive is a fast paced course, but I had a great time!" Darla L.
