Metalsmithing I Instructor: Darlene Armstrong Prerequisite: None Class Limit: 10
This comprehensive metalsmithing class is designed to introduce the fundamentals of jewelry design and execution. Studio habits, safety and design elements will be covered in detail. This Metals I class is the beginning of learning specific metalsmithing skills. Subsequent metals classes have been designed to build on each other step by step, reinforcing what has already been learned and introducing new techniques.
Metals II students will concentrate on bezeling and stone setting skills. Bracelet elements and making a toggle are added. The second project is a textured flat wire ring with a faceted stone. These skills will be learned in Metals II and perfected in Metals III.
Metals III students will design their own wire project incorporating more faceted stones and pearls (or other stones) and learn to do a hollow box pendant, also with a faceted stone. This box pendant is designed by the student and executed with instructors help. These projects not only reinforce what has already been introduced, but gives each student the opportunity to design & execute their own pieces with the instructors help. Metals II students perfect their soldering skills by learning how to solder many things at the same time.
Metalsmithing I students will learn how to saw, pierce, hammer, file, sand, buff, solder, sweat solder, anneal metal, roll print, hammer texture, patina, set stones, make templates, stamp, dome, ball up wire, make a bail, as well as finishing techniques. Two projects will be offered and students should finish both projects during class, a pendant and a pair of earrings. Students will receive a folder of school info and detailed handouts, with room to add notes and “how to’s.” Upon completion of this class Students will be awarded a certificate of completion of 30 hours class time and comprehensive handouts for both projects.
*Due to rising metal costs, all tool lists for Metals I, II, & III have been modified so that the silver sheet cost has been cut in half. Students in these classes can now buy smaller quantities. In Metals II the student may choose to use copper instead of sterling- tool lists will have this as an option where indicated.
DSMA now has Metalsmithing I tool kits to rent for $25. This saves students $100 off of their beginning supplies. If you are enrolled in a Beginning class and would like to rent one, please call the school admin to reserve your kit. 303-428-3162
