This comprehensive metalsmithing class has been carefully designed to introduce the fundamentals of jewelry fabrication. Studio habits and safety practices will be covered in detail, along with the specific tools, equipment, and chemicals we currently use in DSJA. This class teaches basic metalsmithing skills, and we work in copper and sterling silver in order to keep things affordable for you.
Students will learn many techniques while building a pendant with a single cabochon stone, and a pair of roll-printed earrings. Some of these include: how to saw out shapes in sheet metal, hammer texture, use design stamps, refine shapes with files, sand edges smooth, shape, dap, anneal metals, solder pieces together, roll print, patina, set stones, make bail templates, ball up Argentium wire, and several different finishing techniques. Students will receive an in-depth soldering lecture which covers many aspects of soldering, tools, chemicals and STUDIO SAFETY.
If all goes as planned, students should finish both basic projects during class, along with many practice pieces.
Students will receive a digital handbook of jewelry making info and a detailed handout for both primary projects. Upon successful completion of this class, students will be awarded a Certificate of Completion for 30 hours & will be given a free 4 hour Open Studio card.
DSJA provides tool kits for our Metalsmithing I class! This saves you about $95 or so. There are additional supplies and tools you will need to buy that go along with this kit. If you have any questions, please give us a shout, and we will be happy to answer them for you.
